Printable temporary tattoo designs: how the paper works
Home tattoo paper usually comes as two sheets: a printable decal sheet and a clear adhesive sheet. You print onto the decal sheet, let the ink dry, press the adhesive sheet on top, then cut out each design. To apply one, peel off the clear film, press it face-down on clean, dry skin, hold a damp cloth over it for as long as your paper’s instructions say, then slide the backing away.
Because it goes on face-down, the print has to be mirrored, or text reads backward on your skin. This sheet mirrors every design automatically, so don’t turn on mirroring in your printer settings as well. The layout is meant for inkjet tattoo paper; laser versions exist too, so match the paper to your printer.
Use paper sold for skin use from a reputable brand, test a small piece on your skin first and avoid broken or irritated skin. Expect a print to last a few days, less on areas that rub, like hands and ankles. Baby oil or an oil-based makeup remover lifts it off gently.

Custom temporary tattoo designs to try
A sheet of temporary tattoos is useful for more than parties. A few ways to use it:
- Test a placement
- Wear a design at the size you’re considering, exactly where you’d put a real tattoo, through a few days of normal life.
- Compare sizes
- Print the same design at 3, 5 and 8 cm and try each one on the spot you have in mind.
- Party sheets
- A full page of small designs for a birthday party, with an adult applying them for younger kids.
- Team and club days
- One design for everyone at a team event, a club meetup or a family reunion.
- Festival minis
- The 3 cm size suits the wrist or the spot behind the ear and can last the weekend.
- Handmade favors
- Cut the sheet into single tattoos and hand them out as party favors or tuck them into cards.

Where temporary tattoos hold best
Flat, smooth, low-friction skin gives the cleanest transfer and the longest wear: the inner forearm, the outer upper arm, the shoulder blade, the calf and the outside of the ankle. Skin with lots of hair, creases or constant movement – fingers, palms, the inside of the elbow – breaks the print up quickly.
If you’re using it to test a placement, put the temporary one exactly where you plan the real tattoo, at the size you have in mind. Check it in the mirror, in photos and with different clothes. If you still like it after a few days, you have your answer. For a quick look without printing anything, the try-on tool shows the design on a photo of your skin.
FAQ
Printable Temporary Tattoo Designs FAQ
Is the temporary tattoo generator free?
Choosing a design and setting the size and paper are free and happen in your browser. Printing the mirrored sheet or downloading it as a print-ready PNG costs 1 credit per sheet. You just need temporary tattoo paper and a printer.
What paper do I need?
Printable temporary tattoo paper, usually sold as kits with a decal sheet and an adhesive sheet. This sheet is set up for inkjet paper; if you have a laser printer, buy paper made for laser printers. Choose paper intended for skin use from a reputable brand and follow its instructions.
Why is the design printed backward?
Temporary tattoos are applied face-down, which flips the image. Printing it mirrored means it reads the right way once it’s on your skin – essential for letters and numbers. The generator mirrors every design for you, so leave mirroring switched off in your printer settings.
How long do printable temporary tattoos last?
Usually a few days. Placement matters most: flat, low-friction areas like the upper arm or shoulder last longest, while hands, feet and joints wear off much sooner. Keep the area dry for the first few hours, avoid scrubbing it and pat it dry after showering.
Are homemade temporary tattoos safe for kids?
Use paper sold for skin use, follow the age guidance on the pack and do a small patch test first. An adult should apply and remove them for young children, and they shouldn’t go on broken, irritated or sunburned skin. Remove them gently with baby oil.
