Roman numerals tattoo basics: how the system works
Roman numerals use seven letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. You add values when a letter is followed by an equal or smaller one (VI = 6, XX = 20) and subtract when a smaller letter comes before a larger one (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900).
In standard form, no letter repeats more than three times in a row, and there’s no zero. So 2019 is MMXIX (2,000 + 10 + 9) and 1994 is MCMXCIV (1,000 + 900 + 90 + 4). The generator uses this standard subtractive form – IV rather than the IIII you sometimes see on clock faces – and handles any year up to 3999.

Date to Roman numerals tattoo: get the order right
Dates are written differently around the world. The US uses month-day-year (MM.DD.YYYY); much of Europe, Latin America and Australia use day-month-year (DD.MM.YYYY); and the ISO standard uses year-month-day. July 4, 2019 becomes VII · IV · MMXIX in US order but IV · VII · MMXIX day-first.
Whenever the day is 12 or lower, the same numerals can be read as two different dates – so double-check. Decide whose convention the tattoo follows, write the date out in words next to the numerals and convert each part back before you book. Your artist copies exactly what you give them, mistakes included.

Roman numeral date tattoo ideas
Roman numerals are compact, timeless and easy to pair with other elements. Directions that work well:
- Wedding or anniversary date
- Along the inner forearm or collarbone, sometimes with two small initials.
- A child’s birth date
- Set in delicate capitals, alone or under the child’s name.
- A date in memory
- Paired with a small symbol, a flower or a heartbeat line.
- A single year
- MMXIX on its own is short enough for a wrist or behind the ear.
- A wrap-around band
- The full date circling the wrist, ankle or upper arm.
- Numerals and a birth flower
- The date running along a flower stem for a softer, botanical look.

Where Roman numeral dates sit best
Full dates are long: December 28, 1998 becomes XII · XXVIII · MCMXCVIII. Give them a horizontal line with room to breathe, such as the inner forearm, collarbone, upper back, ribs or the back of the arm, or run them vertically down the spine. Short dates and single years fit a wrist or behind the ear.
Keep numerals large enough that the gaps between letters stay open as the ink settles – rows of I’s and X’s blur together when they’re tiny. Cinzel’s clean capitals are a strong choice, and the try-on tool shows the full length on a photo of your own arm.
FAQ
Roman Numeral Tattoo Generator FAQ
How do I write a date in Roman numerals for a tattoo?
Convert the month, day and year separately and join them with a separator. June 14, 2019 in US order is VI · XIV · MMXIX. The generator does this for you, with your choice of date order, separator and a two- or four-digit year.
Should I use the US or European date order?
Use the order the people closest to the date would write it. In the US that’s month first; in much of Europe, Latin America and Australia it’s day first. Whichever you pick, remember that dates with a day of 12 or lower can be read both ways, so confirm it before you book.
How are 2000s years written in Roman numerals?
Two thousand is MM, and you add from there: 2001 is MMI, 2010 is MMX, 2020 is MMXX, 2024 is MMXXIV, 2025 is MMXXV and 2026 is MMXXVI. Short years work the same way – 19 is XIX – but they drop the century, so make sure that’s what you want.
How can I check my numerals are correct?
Convert each part back to digits: read the letters left to right, adding values and subtracting a smaller letter that sits before a larger one. Then have someone else check it, and compare against a second converter. Do it before the stencil is made – a wrong numeral is hard to fix later.
What font is best for Roman numerals?
Inscriptional capitals like Cinzel are the classic choice – they look carved and stay clear. Garamond feels softer and more elegant, the typewriter style looks understated, the thin geometric style suits delicate work and Old English adds drama.
