Type one word — or two — and preview how it reads when the design turns 180°.
Leave the second word empty for a symmetrical ambigram that reads the same both ways. Hand the preview to the AI to letter a true ambigram with matching strokes.

How to use the ambigram tattoo generator
The preview sets your words in blackletter and rotates them so you can judge the idea. The AI step then sketches lettering that tries to join both readings into one design.
- 1. Type the upright word
- Up to 14 letters. Short words with simple letter shapes are the easiest to turn into ambigrams.
- 2. Add a second word
- Optional. Leave it empty for a symmetrical ambigram that reads the same both ways, or enter the word it should become upside down.
- 3. Flip and letter it
- Tap the preview to rotate it 180°, then choose Letter my ambigram with AI to generate custom lettering sketches.

Ambigram generator basics: rotational and mirror ambigrams
An ambigram is lettering designed to be read in more than one way. A rotational ambigram reads the same word, or a different one, when turned 180°. It’s the most common kind for tattoos, because you see the design from one side and everyone else sees it from the other. A mirror ambigram reads correctly in a reflection, across a vertical or horizontal line. This tool previews rotation.
Rotation pairs letters from opposite ends: the first letter of one reading becomes the last letter of the other, upside down. A few words already work in plain capitals – SWIMS and NOON read the same both ways – but most need custom shapes, where each letter is drawn to look like one thing upright and another when rotated.
That’s why custom lettering matters. A font can’t create an ambigram, and to create an ambigram tattoo that reads cleanly, someone has to balance both readings stroke by stroke. Treat the AI sketches as concepts, and have a lettering artist or your tattoo artist refine the winner.

Create an ambigram tattoo: ideas that work
Rotational ambigrams work best when both readings mean something together. Some starting points:
- Two virtues
- Faith upright and Hope upside down, or Love and Hope – one reading for you, one for everyone else.
- Two names
- Partners, a parent and child or two siblings, with each name appearing as the design turns.
- One meaningful word
- A single word that reads the same both ways, such as a name, a motto or a place.
- Opposites
- Pairs like Rise and Fall or Light and Dark, where the flip itself is the message.
- Years and numbers
- In plain digits, 0, 1 and 8 stay the same when rotated and 6 and 9 swap – so 1961 reads the same upside down.
- Name and year
- A first name upright and a meaningful year upside down, lettered to match.

Best placements for an ambigram
Pick a spot people naturally see from more than one direction. The inner forearm works especially well: it reads one way to you and the other way to anyone facing you. The upper back, across the shoulders, the chest and the outer forearm also suit horizontal ambigrams, while a vertical one can run down the spine or along the side of the ribs.
Ambigram lettering is dense and full of deliberate shapes, so give it room. Fingers, the side of the hand and other tiny spots squeeze out the details that make both readings work. Try the design on a photo with the try-on tool first, and check that it reads both ways at actual size.
FAQ
Ambigram Tattoo Generator FAQ
Is the ambigram tattoo generator free?
Typing your words and flipping the preview is free and runs in your browser. Downloading the ambigram as a PNG costs 1 credit, and lettering it with AI uses credits too — new accounts get 1 free credit.
Can any word become an ambigram?
Almost any word can, with enough custom lettering, but some pairs are much easier than others. Words of similar length, with letters that echo each other when rotated – n and u, M and W, d and p – come out cleanest. Very long or mismatched pairs force compromises in legibility.
What’s the difference between a rotational and a mirror ambigram?
A rotational ambigram reads correctly when turned 180°, like flipping a card upside down. A mirror ambigram reads correctly in a reflection, across a vertical or horizontal line. Rotational designs are more common for tattoos because they work when you and other people view them from opposite sides.
Why doesn’t the preview look like a finished ambigram?
The preview sets your words in a blackletter font and rotates them, so you can judge the length, rhythm and pairing of the two readings. A true ambigram needs letters drawn specially for both readings – that’s what the AI lettering step and, ideally, a lettering artist are for.
Can my tattoo artist work from an AI ambigram?
Yes, as a concept. Before you book, check that both readings work by asking someone who doesn’t know the words to read it each way. Your artist may redraw strokes to improve legibility and flow; once it’s final, turn it into a clean stencil for the appointment.
